Chapter Eight

“Look at that one,” Alex said with excitement in his voice as he pointed to a snow carving of an eagle flying between the tops of two evergreen trees.

“The detail of the feathers is incredible,” Olivia said, moving closer to the carving to get a better look. After spending last Saturday with Alex, Olivia couldn’t get him off her mind. They’d sat together at the Sunday church service. Although Alex had acted slightly nervous, he seemed to enjoy the sermon and engaged in a conversation with Bo and Ky when they’d gathered outside in the parking lot while she’d spoken with Stacy.

As a group, they’d ended up going out to eat lunch together. It had amazed Olivia how well Alex seemed to fit in with her friends. How well he fit into her life. She’d arrived home Wednesday after a long day of work to find someone had shoveled away the snow that had fallen all morning so she could get into her garage without any trouble. Her front walk had also been cleared of snow. When she texted Alex to thank him, he texted back a thumbs-up and a brief message of “you’re welcome.”

She’d been considering his offer to work on Grandpa’s pickup, and not just because she wanted to get it running again, but also because it would offer an excuse for Alex to be at her house.

Olivia kept telling herself she and Alex were just friends. Nothing more. She’d dated too many losers in the years since she’d been gone from Pinehill to consider getting into a serious relationship. Her last one, which had ended with a broken engagement, had been the final nail in the coffin of romance as far as she was concerned.

Yet, despite what her head knew, her heart galloped at the thought of spending more time with Alex. She’d called him yesterday afternoon and asked if he’d like to go with her to the Winter Fest. Since it was Saturday, it was packed with crowds. Olivia had suggested arriving early in hopes it wouldn’t be too crowded. So far, there weren’t too many tourists out and about.

“Oh, I love this one,” Olivia said as they stood in front of a snow carving of a couple waltzing. The woman’s gown was an ornate creation, complete with roses decorating her skirt, and tendrils of her upswept hair framing her face.

“I can hardly wrap my head around the talent and skill it takes to make these,” Alex said, walking around the couple, then taking a photo of it.

“Are you taking the pictures for yourself or to send to someone?”

“My aunt Gracie loves this sort of stuff,” Alex said, studying a big four-poster bed made of snow. Two little girls wiggled on the bed while their parents took pictures.

“How about you?” Olivia asked and pointed to the back of the park where the snow carvings were on display. Towering above everything were three dinosaurs. The tallest had to be close to thirty feet in height.

“Wow! How do you suppose they did that?” Alex asked as they walked toward the dinosaurs.
